The journal

About this journal

An independent reading room for Islamic law, legal history and society.

A place for careful reading

ShariaSource publishes accessible, source-led essays and research guides on Islamic law, its histories and its institutions. We write for students, researchers and readers who want to move from a broad question to an identifiable document. Our interests include legal learning, women and authority, family law, manuscripts and finance.

The journal's approach is academic and informational. Articles identify the source and setting of an argument, preserve differences of interpretation and distinguish historical discussion from present legal claims.

The history of this address

This domain previously hosted the SHARIAsource blog associated with Harvard Law School's Program in Islamic Law. The original academic project is documented by Harvard's program page and a 2018 McGill Library account. Many historical posts can now be consulted at the Islamic Law Blog.

The present site is independently operated. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a publication of Harvard University, its Program in Islamic Law or the Islamic Law Blog. The historical authors and institutions retain credit for their work. This site's archive provides new editorial abstracts and bibliographic records, with links to original locations where known; it does not claim to republish the original collection.
